It's an Icelandic
invention that the manufactures say has great promise in
Colorado. The diamond-studded tires will be available here
in a matter of weeks.
Coloradoans who've ordered the tires on-line, swear by
them.
Nancy Bibb of Pinecliff for example says her driveway
is full of curves and is very steep, but the tires had no
problem.
"I didn't skid any or ever lose traction-- they went through snow
and clawed over the ice--they
had a great grip," says Nancy.
You can see the tread of the Green Diamond tire
sparkle in the afternoon sun. The diamonds in the rubber are
man-made industrial diamonds. There are 1,000s of
them in every tire.
The manufacturer says the tire is long life, low
noise, and doesn't damage the road.
But most of all, the tire is touted as very good on
black ice, packed snow and in the deep snow conditions.
"The traction is as you would expect from a studded
tire with the advantage that you can run these year round,"
says Green Diamond president Rich Gostenik. "Actually
the tire gets better traction as the tire ages."
That's because, as the treads wear, more and more of
the diamonds are exposed.
Green Diamond also claims they can deliver the tire at
a very competitive price.
"In the 16-inch tire size, you'll likely pay $140-$160
for a major manufacturer's snow tire. "The Green Diamond tire of the
same size is about 20% less," says Gostenik.
The name-brand tire makers say there's something else
buyers should know about Green Diamond tires.
The diamond tire is a re-manufactured tire.
"With a re-treaded tire you're not really going to
know wear because you're not going to know how the tire was
constructed," says a representative of a local Goodyear
retailer.
"It could be a Goodyear, Dunlop, or Kelly Springfield
tire or it could be someone else's tire."
But Green Diamond says their tires exceed all
performance specifications and DOT standards.
"The old rubber from the major manufacturer is scuffed
off and then it's re-built from bead to bead--in essence
giving you new sidewall--new tread and new sidewall,"
Gostenik told 9News.
He says the tire will run for 40-45,000 miles.
Green Diamond is working on getting a local
distributor, which they hope to announce in a matter of
weeks.
Until that time, the tires can purchased online at
